ポジティブじゃないのにpositively？
ネガティブな形容詞にpositivelyがくっついてる
先日、大好きな海外ドラマシリーズを観ていたら、ちょっと気になることがありました。ネガティブな文脈でpositivelyが出てきたのです。「いい意味で」と字幕では訳されていました。
たとえば、こんな一文があったとします。
“Your performance this term was positively shocking.”
「きみの今期の成績にはいい意味で驚かされたよ」
こう訳した場合、ポジティブなことを言っているように聞こえますか？ それともネガティブ？
（前にも書いた通り、字幕翻訳者は深い考えのもとに訳語を選びます。これから説明する内容など、きっと百も承知で訳語を選ばれていることでしょう。なので、これは決して「誤訳見つけた！」という記事ではありません。あくまでも、「positivelyという英単語について考えてみよう」というのがこの記事の目的です。）
positivelyというのだから、 ポジティブな意味なのでは？
positiveと言えば、「積極的な」「前向きな」「肯定的な」「建設的な」など、“良い意味”がずらりと並びます。良い印象を与える代表的な言葉です。それでは、positiveが副詞になったpositivelyも良い意味なのでは、と思いますよね。
ところが、です。実は、この場合のpositivelyにポジティブな意味はありません。
強調のpositively
基本的に、positivelyは強調の意味で使われます。

さらに、質問に対する返事でpositivelyと一言だけ言うことも。この場合、yesよりも強い意味で、「もちろん」「その通り」という意味です。

これは、「前向きに検討しています」という意味ではありませんのでご注意を。
つまりpositivelyには「イエスかノーで言うとはっきりとイエス」という用法があるのです。イメージとしては、たとえば何らかの検査試薬を使った結果がくっきりと陽性、というと分かりやすいでしょうか。（ちなみに、形容詞のpositiveにはこの「陽性の」という意味があります。）
形容詞のpositiveも「疑問の余地がない、確然たる；明白な、決定的な、断固たる」という意味があります。 “a positive denial”というのは「きっぱりした拒否」です（定義と用例は小学館ランダムハウス英和大辞典）。

2と3はポジティブな意味のpositivelyです。（5は「陽性」の意味で、4は「疑いの余地なく」のpositively。）
しかし、ネガティブな文脈で使われるpositivelyは1の用法。 “Some diets may be positively dangerous.”という例文が出ています。これを「いい意味で危険なダイエットもある」と訳したらどういう意味になるでしょうか？ 一見害をなすようだけれども実はそれが本人にとっては有益なダイエット、という感じですかね。このpositivelyは決してそういう意味ではありません。「中には有害なダイエットもある」という意味で、「害がある」ときっぱり言い切っています。
「びっくりだけどホントそうなの！」
つまり、ネガティブな文脈で使われるpositivelyは、「びっくりだけどそうなんです」という意味をこめた強調の言葉です。ですから、この使い方だと良い意味の形容詞はまず出てきません。
×：Her speech was positively inspiring.
〇：Her speech was positively depressing.
もちろん、「まさかこの人が感動的なスピーチをしてくれるなんて！」という場合には “positively inspiring”でOKです。
